THE EXPERIENCE ~ Vacationing at our home in Calamity Creek is a true escape and a step back in time. An honest-to-goodness retreat. Our home is pleasingly remote, situated on 20 acres a half-mile from the highway down a dirt road. During your visit, you can take in magnificent sunsets and catch sight of wildlife: antelope, deer, javelina, and birds. Depending on the season, the landscape is also full of butterflies, lizards, crickets and wildflowers. One of our favorite pasttimes is simply being with family and friends out on the porch under the cool night skies looking at the stars with a fire crackling away in the chiminea.

THE LAND ~ At an elevation of nearly a mile high, we think it's the most beautiful land in the world. While basking in the hammocks on our wraparound porch, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Cathedral Mountain, McIntyre Peak and Mount Ord. Yes, there really are mountains in Texas! Located just 12 minutes south of Alpine, 45 minutes from Marfa, an hour from the McDonald Observatory, and two hours from Big Bend National Park, there's plenty to explore. Or, stay put and enjoy the fresh breeze, sunny skies, and starlit nights.

THE HOUSE ~ The house has two bedrooms downstairs, one with a full-size bed, one with a queen; a bathroom, kitchen, and great room with vaulted ceilings and windows all around to take in the mountain views. There is also an upstairs loft with a queen bed and office work space. We offer free WIFI and have a landline telephone. (Your cell phones may not work out here.) There's a separate casita with an additional bathroom and shower, and laundry facilities. We make up the beds with only the finest cotton sheets and down pillows and comforters. We also offer plush bath linens and local handmade soap.
The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove and oven, a full-size fridge, microwave, and is well stocked with all the cookware, dishes, spices, oils, and condiments you could need for your mountain vacation. We pride ourselves on our cool and refreshing, sweet water that comes straight from the land's abundant aquifers. Outside is a barrel grill with charcoal at the ready for grilling out. Our heirloom dining room table is set for six but can easily be expanded for a dinner party of ten. And we're stocked with candles and table linens to step it up a notch -- or to create a romantic dinner for two.

OUR STORY ~ Katherine is an artist, author and gardener. Tom is a journalist, runner, and entrepreneur. We lived at Calamity Creek full-time with our two young children and a few dozen hens, before relocating to nearby Marfa, a magical town where Tom ran Marfa Public Radio - 93.5 FM, a community radio station that he founded in 2005. Now we're on to a new adventure in Idaho where Tom heads up another NPR radio station and Katherine continues to make art. And even though we're far from our beloved West Texas, it burns brightly in our hearts and minds and we visit often.

We know you'll love it, too. Book your stay today.
